Privacy policy

We collect as little as we can. This page lists everything blogVersy records about visitors, why, and how long it is kept. It is written in plain language on purpose.

Who is responsible

blogVersy publishes blogVersy and is responsible for the data described here. Questions go through the contact page.

What we record

  • Page visits. The page opened, the website you came from (only its name), your device type (phone, tablet or computer) and the time. We turn your IP address and browser details into a short code that changes every day, which lets us count one reader once without being able to recognise you from one day to the next. Your IP address itself is not stored in these records. Kept for up to 14 months, then deleted.
  • Reading. How far down a story you scrolled and for how long you were active on it. It is tied to the same daily code, never to your name. Kept for up to 14 months.
  • Searches. What you type into our search box and how many results it found, with the daily code. We use this to write about what readers cannot find yet. Kept for up to 14 months.
  • Our email list. If you sign up we store your email address, the story you signed up from, the website you came from, the time you agreed and a one way code made from your network address that helps us spot abuse. We use it only to send you our stories. It is kept until you unsubscribe. Every email contains a link to unsubscribe, and you can also ask us on the contact page. Our email service provider processes the address on our behalf.
  • Messages. If you write to us we keep your message, your name and your email address so we can answer. We delete messages after about 12 months.
  • Server logs. Like every website, our hosting provider keeps short technical logs (including IP addresses) to keep the site secure and running. These are kept by the provider for a limited time.

We do not use third party analytics, tracking pixels or social media trackers on this site. We do not sell your data.

Cookies and similar storage

blogVersy does not set cookies for readers. Your own choices, such as light or dark mode, text size and the stories you hearted, are kept in your browser's local storage and never leave your device. Only the site owner's login uses a cookie.

If we show ads in the future, advertising partners may set cookies or use similar technology to show and measure ads. This page will be updated before that happens, and where the law requires it we will ask for your consent first.

Other companies that see your visit

To show a page, your browser contacts a few other servers, which can therefore see your IP address: Google Fonts, which supplies our typefaces, and the photo libraries that host the cover photos (Unsplash, Wikimedia Commons, Flickr and similar). Links in our stories lead to other websites with their own privacy practices, so please read theirs.

Why we are allowed to use this data

For readers in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and similar regions: we count visits and searches because we have a legitimate interest in understanding which stories help readers and in keeping the site secure, and we have kept that data anonymous wherever we can. We use your email address only with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

Your rights

You can ask to see the data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to its use, or to receive a copy. You can withdraw consent to emails at any time. Because visit and search records use a daily anonymous code, we usually cannot link them to you, and we will tell you if that is the case. To make a request, use the contact page. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

This site is for a general audience and is not aimed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us their email address, please tell us and we will delete it.

Where data is processed

Our servers and our service providers may be in other countries than yours. Where personal data is moved across borders, we rely on the safeguards the law provides for such transfers.

Changes to this policy

When we change this page we update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use your email address, we will tell you before it applies.
